High-speed video observations of rocket-and-wire initiated lightning

چکیده
[1] We present observations of a rocket-and-wire triggered lightning flash obtained with high-speed video cameras recording 5400 and 50000 frames per second (frame times 185 ms and 20 ms) with time-synchronized current and electric field measurements. Transient leader channels were observed with precursor current pulses occurring before the development of the sustained upward positive leader that initiated the initial continuous current. The sustained upward positive leader stepped with a constant speed of 5.6 10 m s 1 over its initial 100 m. The wire destruction occurred discontinuously over a time of 7 ms about 45 ms after sustained upward leader inception, with a small change in channel current. Downward leaders, upward connecting leaders, and filamentary streamers were imaged in the bottom 50 m of the channel. We present the first images of a negative step forming in lightning, apparently involving a space stem similar to steps in meter-length negative laboratory sparks. Citation: Biagi, C. J., D. M. Observations of stepping mechanisms in a rocket‐and‐wire triggered lightning flash
[1] We present 10 high‐speed video images that depict the bottom 150 m of a downward‐ negative, dart‐stepped leader in a rocket‐and‐wire triggered flash, recorded at 240 kiloframes per second (4.17 ms frame integration time), along with correlated measurements of the X‐ray emission at 50 m, electric field derivative (dE/dt) at 80 m, and the rocket‐ launch‐tower current beneath the leader. We ob...
متن کاملThe Physics of Lightning
An overview of the physics of cloud-to-ground lightning is given, including its initiation, propagation, and attachment to ground. Discharges artificially initiated (triggered) from natural thunderclouds using the rocket-and-wire technique are discussed with a view toward studying properties of natural lightning. Both conventional and runaway breakdown mechanisms of lightning initiation in thun...
متن کاملEMTP Modeling of a Triggered-Lightning Strike to the Phase Conductor of an Overhead Distribution Line
A triggered-lightning experiment and EMTP modeling of that experiment are used to study the responses of a twoconductor overhead power line to a direct lightning strike. The experiment was conducted at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing (ICLRT) at Camp Blanding, FL. The lightning was artificially initiated (triggered) from a natural thundercloud using the rocket-and-wir...
متن کاملAn experimental study of positive leaders initiating rocket-triggered lightning
Simultaneous, co-located measurements of ambient, electrostatic-field profiles and rockettriggered lightning phenomenology beneath Florida thunderstorms are reported. Ambient-field conditions that are sufficient to initiate and sustain the propagation of positive lightning leaders are identified. It is found that lightning can be triggered with grounded triggering wires Ž approximately 400 m lo...
متن کاملInitial stage in lightning initiated from tall objects and in rocket- triggered lightning
[1] We examine the characteristics of the initial stage (IS) in object-initiated lightning derived from current measurements on the Gaisberg tower (100 m, Austria), the Peissenberg tower (160 m, Germany), and the Fukui chimney (200 m, Japan) and their counterparts in rocket-triggered lightning in Florida. All lightning events analyzed here effectively transported negative charge to ground. For ...
